There's Still Places Like This

Again, maybe not Gladstone Local but a mere 2hrs drive finds you at Moore Park Beach. I’ve often passed the sign while heading to Bundaberg and wondered what it was like. It turns out it’s completely different than I thought. Being so close to Bundy, I assumed it would be commercial. I couldn’t have been further from the truth. Although it’s a rich man’s suburb in places, it still has the “Old school caravan park feel”. There’s no lines of café’s and souvenir shops. Just houses and parks. There’s a local surf club and the beach is patrolled. Then back away from the beach, there’s a servo, tavern and IGA. And a little bakery for those among us that like, um…, Bakery products. The caravan park wasn’t overcrowded, and even during the school holiday, it was easy to get 2 sites side by side. We set up and quickly headed to the beach. The park is on the beach front sitting elevated on/behind the dunes, still allowing a breeze but no real view of the beach from your site. The amenities were great and there’s a small pool for those dodging the Blue Bottles. Yes, Blue Bottles. There were quite a few washed up and one little girl got a sting, but there were heaps still swimming. This would probably be common along most of the CQ coast at this time of the year. We watched a lad soak some prawns and pick up a small feed off the beach, but we didn’t have much luck ourselves. We took a drive north along the beach to the mouth of the Kolan River on the second day and tried our luck on an outgoing tide. The run was fierce, and we probably didn’t have the right gear, but we did get a couple of bites. Though it is hard to beat standing on an almost deserted beach with your feet in the water. It was low tide and it was a great beach to drive on, as long as the tide is low. This place is popular with the families and if you like the luxury of showers, toilets and power, it’s definitely worth a visit.
