Cania Gorge

Technically not the Gladstone region, Cania Gorge has always been popular with Gladstone Campers. While I don't have any current photos to share, I've found some on the net. I've visited many times and camped twice, although it's been a few years since. Myself, I preferred the Retreat. It's has beautiful grassed sites, a pool and reception has a small shop included that sells a good range of most things you'll need. We found the owners friendly and helpful. They also love their lawns and the peace and quiet, and they used to have a reputation for protecting both. The gorge walks are close by and are easily accessed by foot. Cania Dam is 12km away and is "Stocked Impoundment". This means you require a permit to fish. The dam is stocked with Saratoga, Bass and Yellow Belly, but no Red Claw at the time and they want to keep it that way. There's a great park area on the bank and it can be packed on weekends with skiers, swimmers and family BBQ'ers. Closer to the dam is the Big4 caravan park. This is very popular with the families with younger kids. I haven't stayed there myself but my family has spent many holidays there with the kids. There's plenty to keep them occupied and out of your hair. I did a lap of the park on an Easter weekend a few years ago and the place was packed to the point of overflow. My mother was waiting until 11pm to get into the showers without having to line up. Again, it's been a few years since I've been out there but I still hear similar reports. "Big4 if you have kids" "Can be very busy during holidays" "The retreat is the quiet one". Cania is well worth a visit and is only a little over two hours away.
