1770 Campground

What a spot! This place would have to be the most beautiful spot on the CQ coast, and everyone knows it. I've stayed there 3 or 4 times over the years from just dropping in on my motorbike with a 2 man tent and a guitar, to bringing everything including the boat. I haven't been for quite a few years now and mostly it's a matter of principle. A few years ago I tried to book in over a period of 3 weeks. 4 phone calls went unanswered and messages were left. Not once did they return my call. So I stopped calling. Now I don't know if it has the same management or management practices these days so don't let that dissuade you from calling, because as I said, I recon it's the most beautiful spot on the CQ coast. Heaps of people use the camp as a home base for heading out to the southern great barrier reef islands, either visiting or fishing, and Round Hill Creek can offer up some reasonable fishing as well. We picked up 3 crabs over a long weekend and a couple of bream. Round Hill Creek is a maze though. Wide and shallow. Fairly well unnavigable at low tide beyond the marina. We walked our tinny with the incoming tide and were surprised by where the channel actually was. This is one of the only spots on the QLD coast that you can watch the sunset over water. At the same time every afternoon, the park empties and the beach fills with people doing just that. The water at the beach is shallow for a fair way out so is great for the little kids but you have to be vigilant. There is a small field of rocks at one end that's a perfect hiding spot for stone fish. I scooped a huge one up in a landing net beside where our boat was floating in knee deep water. He'd swum away from the rocks so was very easy to see. There was also a report of a croc further up Round Hill Creek earlier this year. Some of the beach front sites have a fire place and one of the best memories for me was boiling a crab over the fire while the mate was standing beside me with a line in the water. Give it a go.
